Green Party Nominee Jill Stein Visits Penn State

Good morning!

We start off today not focusing on Trump, but on a third party. Dr. Jill Stein will speak shortly in Freeman Auditorium at Penn State. Turnout is on the low end. Here was part of the auditorium about 15 minutes before the scheduled start for the event:

The crowd has doubled with 10 minutes to go, but that’s not saying much. But we will!Inside the Train will live-blog this event, so stay posted on this page and refresh periodically for developments.

11:31 A.M. — Supporters put up a makeshift sign asking, “Is there a DOCTOR in the HOUSE?”

11:36 A.M. — A representative just took to the lectern and told the audience that Stein is “on the property” and officials are trying to find out where exactly she parked. So…I guess no secret service protection?

11:52 A.M. — More than 20 minutes past start time and still no Stein. However, the President of We Are for Trump just arrived, sitting cozy with a reporter from the Daily Collegian.

12:10 P.M. — Stein still a no-show 40 minutes after her scheduled start time. Local Green Party representatives and basically anyone that wants to talk have been storming the stage for a while now.

12:16 P.M. — Dr. Stein has just walked into Freeman from the back. She will take the stage shortly after a young woman and her mother speak against pipeline development.

12:36 P.M. — Dr. Stein has finally taken the stage over an hour after its scheduled start.

12:43 P.M. — Stein expresses outrage over Dakota pipeline and recent shootings of black men by police.

1:14 P.M. — Dr. Stein finishes her speech and takes questions from the audience. The first: What is the Green Party platform on Autism? Oh boy. Stein makes no mention of vaccines in her answer.

1:23 P.M. — A male student tells Stein that although he finds Clinton to be reprehensible, he says a Donald Trump presidency to be “terrifying.” Stein responds by saying that she would “rather go down fighting” and presumably let Trump win than cast a fear vote for Clinton.

1:50 P.M. — And…the event is over. Stein went to the back for an interview and a few young people went up to the stage to grab a selfie with her. I have more on this event, including some of her more memorable remarks. Green Party folk are basically the only ones standing at Freeman.

Oh, and I got a button!

Stay on the train!
